20 sentenced in BUET student Abrar murder case
A tribunal has sentenced 20 accused to death in a case of beating to death of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) student Abrar Fahad. And the remaining 5 people have been given life sentence. Judge Abu Jafar Kamruzzaman of Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal No. 1 pronounced the verdict at 12:10 pm on Wednesday.
The convicts sentenced to death are Mehedi Hasan Russel, Md. Anik Sarkar, Mehedi Hasan Robin, Ifti Musharraf Sakal, Md. Moniruzzaman Monir, Md. Meftahul Islam Zion, Md. Majedur Rahman Majed, Md. Mujahidur Rahman, Khandaker Tabakkarul Islam Tanvir, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Md. Shamim Billah, ASM Nazmus Sadat, Morshed Amartya Islam, Muntasir Al Jamie, Md. Shamsul Arefin Rafat, Md. Mizanur Rahman, SM Mahmud Setu, Morshed-uz-Zaman Mandal Jisan, Ehteshamul Rabbi Tanim and Mujtaba Rafid. Among them Morshed-uz-Zaman Mandal Jisan, Ehteshamul Rabbi Tanim and Mujtaba Rafid are fugitives.
Muhtasim Fouad Hossain, Akash Hossain, Muaz Abu Hurairah, Amit Saha and Ishtiaq Ahmed Munnar have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
Earlier in the morning, 22 accused in the murder case were produced before the court from Dhaka Central Jail at 11:42 am. Judge Abu Jafar Md. Kamruzzaman started reading the verdict from 12 noon.
Three of the 25 accused in the case have been absconding since the beginning.
Meanwhile, Abrar's father Barkat Ullah was present in the court along with several family members to hear the verdict in the murder case. Expressing satisfaction over the verdict, he said, "I am expecting the maximum death sentence for all the accused in the verdict. No one should be acquitted of the case. The verdict should be exemplary, so that no parent like me endure the shock of brutal death cases of their children. We have full trust and confidence in the court.
